Product Description

Two ends of Number 1 are gently twisted together to form our 4ply/Sport weight yarn, Number 2.

Garthenor added a slightly looser twist than most to trap plenty of air in this lofty woollen spun marvel.

Totally undyed and fully certified organic!

About the Breed

Shetland Sheep are known far and wide for their incredible colour palette – they have upwards of 30 basic markings! Small and hardy, they are perfectly adapted to their native home of the Shetland Islands. Garthenor's shetland yarns come from sheep on their own farm, along with a couple of flocks in Southern England.  Among the softest of all British breeds, Shetland wool has long been prized as a superior fibre. Whilst the fineness doesn’t compete with commercial wool producing breeds, the texture, definition and wide range of natural shades are unrivalled across the sheep world. The fibres for this yarn have been produced from sheep to skein in Great Britain.

About the Garthenor

Garthenor’s mission is to promote and provide a variety of sustainable, organic & British wool products in an ecologically responsible way. Every single product Garthenor produces is Certified Organic by The Soil Association to Global Organic Textile Standards.  Their yarns are never dyed or bleached.  There are only ever 2 substances that come into contact with the fibres during processing: a gentle detergent and a spinning oil.  Both of these liquids have been approved the Global Organic Textile Standards, and are fully biodegradable. In 2003, Garthenor became the first fully certified organic yarn in the world.

This item is sold as a 50g skein.  We are happy to wind the skein into a ball for you (just leave us a note to do so in the comment box). Please note that all skeins once wound into a ball are non-refundable.  We only carry washed versions of this yarn, i.e oils used in the spinning process have been removed.
